Evaluation of POP content in ELV waste

VALORCAR promoted a study to assess Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) in End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) as part of the application of Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 by the Portuguese Environment Agency.

This Regulation requires waste thermal destruction when it has POP concentrations above certain limit values. As no systematic information is known about the presence of POP in vehicles (by component, make and model), which would allow the separation of components containing these substances in the dismantling phase, this study focused on quantifying the presence of POP in the fractions and /or components that Shredders recovered from ELV by sampling the fractions of ELV fragmentation residues and subsequent laboratory analysis. These ELV fragmentation assays were carried out in 3 shredders from VALORCAR NETWORK.

The results showed the presence of POP substances in concentrations below the limit values indicated in Regulation (EU) 2019/1021.
